Wednesday 11/3/2002: Helton (TB) and Giles (NYN) win MVP A season for the ages earned Tampa Bay's first baseman Todd Helton the American League MVP this year. His season numbers are: .326 AVG, 173 hits, 57 doubles, no triples and 47 homeruns, along with 152 RBI and 110 runs scored. He's 8th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The 2002 National League MVP winner has been announced as well. It's New York (N)'s centerfielder Brian Giles who really had a great offensive year. This year Giles drove in 139 and scored 136 runs while batting .329 with 49 homeruns. He's 6th in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! |

Monday 10/4/2002: Alex Ochoa clubs five hits in a game PHILADELPHIA - Montreal's leftfielder Alex Ochoa accomplished a difficult feat in a 12-5 win over Philadelphia, drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .241! A pitch from Jeriome Robertson in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 428 feet from home plate in left-center. Number 2 in the 2nd inning accounted for a double. Monday 10/4/2002: It's NO-NO time for Jeff D'amico against New York (A) NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s bats were sleeping, and Baltimore's Jeff D'amico gave them no chance at all to wake up. He was untouchable in firing a no-hitter in his 31st game started this season. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' Friday 9/24/2002: Bartolo Colon fires 2-hitter against Kansas City KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's hitters looked uncomfortable, and Texas' Bartolo Colon didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 2nd shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Colon (14-7) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 97 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' Friday 9/17/2002: Toronto's Munoz severely injured, out for season TORONTO - Toronto's rightfielder Pedro Munoz will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Toronto and Anaheim. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Munoz collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Torn Abdominal Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Pedro has gone 179 for 557 (.321) this season, hitting 21 bombs and driving in 118 runs. He has scored 87 runs on his own. Monday 9/13/2002: Juan Pena fires NO-NO against Philadelphia PHILADELPHIA - San Diego's right-hander Juan Pena is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Philadelphia on no hits. Pena (18-4) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 3, throwing 73 of 128 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' David Mccarty provided San Diego with the offense Pena needed as he went 1 for 4, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 3-0. |

Thursday 9/9/2002: Season ending injury strikes San Diego's Posada SAN DIEGO - San Diego's catcher Jorge Posada suffered a season ending injury he was bowled over in a collision at home plate. Posada laid unconscious on the field for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. He will miss the entire season. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Wrist which will require surgery. His season features a batting average of .254 (131 hits in 516 AB), 31 doubles, 5 triples and 15 homeruns. Posada collected 94 RBI and 94 runs as well. |
Wednesday 9/8/2002: Shawn Green (BAL) will miss 5-6 weeks BALTIMORE - Baltimore's leftfielder Shawn Green suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Boston's Hipolito Pichardo. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Green will probaby miss 5-6 weeks. Green was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Finger. Green has hit 33 homeruns this year while batting .272. He adds 31 doubles, along with 92 runs scored. |

Thursday 9/2/2002: Delino Deshields uncorks five hits against Florida FLORIDA - San Diego's second baseman Delino Deshields accomplished a difficult feat in a 16-6 win over Florida, drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .291! In the 1st inning he unloaded a triple off Stan Spencer. A pitch from Stan Spencer in the 2nd inning left his bat for a RBI triple. A RBI double off Woody Williams in the 6th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. He had singles in the 7th and in the 9th (one RBI). Delino scored 4 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! In the 9th of the game against Boston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. Saturday 8/14/2002: Baltimore's Eldred out for the season BALTIMORE - Baltimore's ace Cal Eldred experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 1st inning of the game against Minnesota, Eldred complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Bone Chips Shoulder. In 26 starts this year Cal struck out 101 batters in 161 innings of work. His ERA is 2.74, his record 10-1. |

Wednesday 8/11/2002: Peter Munro out for 6 weeks LOS ANGELES - When it rains, it pours. Los Angeles' right-hander Peter Munro will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against St. Louis where he left the field in the 5th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Munro compiled an ERA of 3.90, going 10-1 in 23 starts. He fanned 59 while giving up 118 hits in 124.2 innings. |

The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Seattle on Tuesday. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Vazquez (6-10) struck out 4 and walked 2, throwing 66 of 110 pitches for strikes. Thursday 8/5/2002: San Diego's Delino Deshields gets milestone hit SAN DIEGO - San Diego's players had every reason to congratulate Delino Deshields, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 2nd inning was a single off Peter Munro. Along with his 2000 hits, Delino collected 54 homeruns and 710 RBI in 12 seasons. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' |
Tuesday 8/3/2002: Carlos Baerga socks five hits for Cleveland CLEVELAND - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Carlos Baerga after his 5 hit game, which Cleveland won 6-5 against New York (A). A RBI double off Brady Raggio in the 2nd inning accounted for his 1st hit. His 2nd hit was a double off John Johnstone in the 5th inning. His 5th hit, a solo homerun off Jorge Julio in the 12th inning, cleared the fence in center field. His final hit proved to be the game winner as well! He collected singles in the 7th and in the 9th . Tuesday 8/3/2002: Chicago (A)'s Vidro out for 6 weeks CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s Jose Vidro suffered a serious injury Tuesday in a game against Toronto. Vidro fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 6 weeks. Inflamed Hamstring Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Vidro has hit 14 bombs this year while batting .339. He adds 31 doubles, along with 87 runs scored. He's 4th in the American League in batting! |
Monday 8/2/2002: Pujols and Jones win Player of the Week award Anaheim's first baseman Albert Pujols had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Pujols helped his team with an average of .500 and 12 RBI in 26 at bats. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Andruw Jones from San Diego wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. In 21 at bats he hit .476 with 2 HR and 14 RBI. |
Sunday 8/1/2002: Mercedes (DET) and Chiamparino (PIT) win monthly pitcher award Detroit's pitcher Jose Mercedes is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in July. His ERA of just 1.69 helped him to a 3-1 record in July. He worked 32 innings, striking out 15 hitters while walking 4. Jose has a record of 7-10 this season, with an ERA of 4.53. In 131 Innings he was able to strike out 68 batters. Pittsburgh's pitcher Scott Chiamparino is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in July. He went 3-0 in July and finished the month with an ERA of 0.66. He struck out 16 in 27.1 innings. Scott has a record of 9-5 this season, with an ERA of 3.71. In 128.2 Innings he was able to strike out 72 batters. He's 8th in the National League in ERA and 10th in wins! |

Tuesday 7/27/2002: John Stephens blanks Philadelphia with a 2-hitter PHILADELPHIA - John Stephens had an unexpectedly great performance against Philadelphia on Tuesday, pitching a 2-hitter for his 1st shutout of the season. Stephens (1-1) struck out 5 and walked 3, throwing 58 of 99 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Henry Rodriguez will miss at least 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Ulna which will require surgery. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Converse (2-2) struck out 8 and issued 2 BB, throwing 73 of 105 pitches for strikes. Friday 7/16/2002: Kansas City's Jeter severely injured KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, shortstop Derek Jeter, injured himself while rounding a base. Monday 7/5/2002: New York (N)'s Jenkins wins Player of the Week award The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to New York (A)'s Kevin Brown this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Brown was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.56. Along the way he struck out 8 in 17.1 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s leftfielder Geoff Jenkins. He hit .524 with 8 RBI and slugged .905 in 21 at bats. But suddenly Lopez collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Lopez was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Ankle. While compiling an on base percentage of .369, Felipe hit .282 and slugged .532. He has collected 29 runs batted in this year. |

Friday 5/28/2002: Nate Teut turns in great performance against San Francisco SAN FRANCISCO - It was a great day for Arizona's left-hander Nate Teut. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against San Francisco on Friday. Teut (1-1) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 6. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Friday 5/28/2002: Chicago (A)'s Jose Vidro has great day with five hits CLEVELAND - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Chicago (A)'s second baseman Jose Vidro after the 13-8 win over Cleveland. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Eric Milton in the 2nd inning, landed an estimated 356 feet from home plate. That one tied it at 1 runs apiece. Number 2 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 450 feet, cleared the wall in center field. Number 3 in the 7th inning accounted for a RBI double. Friday 5/28/2002: Cleveland's King severely injured CLEVELAND - When it rains, it pours. Cleveland's southpaw Ray King will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (A) where he left the field in the 7th inning. Spasms Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .316 against Ray this season. While posting an ERA of 1.88 he went 2-0 in 0 starts, fanning 13 and walking 7 hitters. |
Monday 5/24/2002: San Diego's Mccarty wins Player of the Week award It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to New York (A)'s centerfielder Randy Winn. In 28 at bats he hit .536 with 1 HR and 7 RBI. It's the 9th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Diego's rightfielder David Mccarty. In 18 at bats he hit .500 with 3 HR and 6 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. David has gone 50 for 153 (.327) this season, hitting 14 taters and driving in 38 runs. He has scored 28 runs on his own. He's 6th in the National League in RBIs and 4th in homeruns! |
Sunday 5/23/2002: Jared Fernandez dominates Boston, throws NO-HITTER KANSAS CITY - Jared Fernandez had his best stuff going, and Boston hitters were chanceless. Kansas City's right-hander fired a NO-NO, his 1st shutout of the season. Fernandez (1-0) fanned none and walked 4, throwing 99 pitches. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today, and it's especially nice to do it in such fashion.' Kansas City's third baseman Charlie Hayes collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Fernandez. Kansas City scored 5 runs on 9 hits. |
Thursday 5/20/2002: Montreal's Riedling out for 5 weeks MONTREAL - Montreal's right-hander John Riedling suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Colorado he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Riedling was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Herniated Disc Back. In 9 starts this year John struck out 27 batters in 51 innings of work. His ERA is 3.18, his record 4-1. |
Monday 5/17/2002: Atlanta's Johnson wins Player of the Week award Todd Helton wins his 6th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Todd went 9 for 21 (.429), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 7 RBI. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Atlanta's first baseman Mark Johnson. He had an on base percentage of .533 and hit .409, while driving in 11 runs. Johnson has walked 20 times this year and posts a .448 OBP. While batting .367, 51 for 139, he has driven in 47 runs. Sunday 5/16/2002: Travis Hafner knocks lights out with three homeruns TEXAS - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Texas' first baseman Travis Hafner accomplished that feat in a 6-0 win over Baltimore. His 1st shot, off Jeff D'amico in the 4th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. A pitch from Jeff D'amico in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 443 feet from home plate in right field. Number 3 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 361 feet, cleared the wall in right field. Travis got 3 hits in 4 AB, scoring three times and driving in 4 runs. So far this season he is batting .269 with 10 homers and 24 RBI. Eric Chavez was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 8/4/2001. Texas improved its record to 26-14, scoring 6 runs on 6 hits. |
Saturday 5/15/2002: Larry Walker stars with 2000th career hit BOSTON - Boston's Larry Walker showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Tampa Bay on Saturday. His hit in the 3rd inning was a two run homerun off Scot Shields. Along with his 2000 hits, Larry collected 343 homeruns and 1288 RBI in 11 seasons. 'I still remember my first hit. Wednesday 5/12/2002: Cleveland's Ivan Rodriguez pounds five hits MINNESOTA - On Wednesday, Cleveland's catcher Ivan Rodriguez displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Minnesota, punishing their pitchers with five hits. A triple off Roberto Duran in the 4th inning, accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Rob Dibble in the 6th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 427 feet from home plate in left-center. He collected singles in the 3rd inning , in the 5th inning and in the 9th inning (one RBI). Ivan scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! Monday 5/10/2002: Chicago (A)'s Vidro wins Player of the Week award The American League's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Jose Vidro, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .577 and hit .542, while driving in 10 runs. Los Angeles' first baseman Rico Brogna had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Brogna helped his team with an average of .545 and 8 RBI in 22 at bats. Brogna has hit for a .345 average this season. Kansas City certainly agrees as Chicago (A)'s second baseman unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Saturday 5/1/2002: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Cleveland's Pedro Martinez. His record of 6-0 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 50.1 innings of work he allowed just 40 hits while striking out 48, compiling an ERA of just 1.97. Pedro pitched a shutout as well. Friday 4/30/2002: Raul Ibanez (CLE) will miss 5-6 weeks CLEVELAND - Cleveland's Raul Ibanez suffered a serious injury Friday in a game against Baltimore. Ibanez fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5-6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Ibanez was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Back Muscle. Ibanez has hit 4 homeruns this year while batting .340. He adds 7 doubles, along with 22 runs scored. |
Tuesday 4/27/2002: Rafael Furcal nabs six hits against Anaheim ANAHEIM - Rafael Furcal saw the ball really well, leading Cleveland to a 42-3 win over Anaheim. Kansas City's right-hander Joe Mays fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Detroit on Friday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Johnny Estrada, then suddenly collapsed. Mays was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays.
