Sunday 10/31/1999: St. Louis' Singleton named Rookie Of The Year Oakland's Carlos Beltran was almost in tears when he heard the news. The 22 year old centerfielder was named the Rookie Of The Year winner in the American League today. What a way to begin a career! This year Beltran drove in 90 and scored 86 runs while batting .312 with 17 bombs. He's 10th in the American League in batting! The 1999 National League Rookie Of The Year winner is from St. Louis this season. Chris Singleton put together impressive numbers for a rookie en route to win the first major award of his career. Sunday 10/10/1999: Houston's Lee Stevens clears fence three times HOUSTON - Lee Stevens was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. Sunday 9/12/1999: Arizona's Torey Lovullo hits for the cycle CHICAGO (N) - Torey Lovullo is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A single in the 1st off Esteban Loaiza accounted for his 1st hit. A 374 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Esteban Loaiza in the 5th inning. A pitch from Esteban Loaiza in the 7th inning left his bat for a double. A pitch from Curt Lyons in the 11th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Torey did drive in 3 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He now has a total of 147 hits this season, accounting for a .301 batting average. He's now the 63rd player in league history to hit for the cycle! On 8/9/1999, Shawn Green was the last player to hit for the cycle. |

Monday 9/6/1999: Lawton and Stevens win Player of the Week award Baltimore's leftfielder Matt Lawton had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. In 24 at bats he hit .417 with 4 HR and 11 RBI. Matt managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Friday 8/27/1999: Jeffrey Hammonds blisters three bombs LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles beat Chicago (N) 10-7, but that was not the real story of the game. Jeffrey Hammonds was, as he went deep three times. In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Esteban Loaiza. Friday 8/27/1999: Ken Hill out for 6 weeks BOSTON - Boston's pitcher Ken Hill was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 4th inning of the game between Boston and Texas. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Hill will miss about 6 weeks. Hill was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Monday 8/16/1999: Curt Schilling turns in great performance against New York (N) NEW YORK (N) - Great days are rare. But not for Arizona's right-hander Curt Schilling. New York (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. Schilling (14-7) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 92 pitches. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Arizona's leftfielder Dwight Smith stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting 2 doubles, scoring twice. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Schilling. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Florida's shortstop John Valentin accomplished that feat in a 15-3 win over San Francisco. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Matt Clement. A 373 foot drive to right field marked his 2nd bomb, a three-run homerun off Ken Patterson in the 5th inning. Monday 5/10/1999: Naehring (MIN) and Grissom (CIN) win P.O.W. award It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Minnesota's shortstop Tim Naehring. He hit .444 with 10 RBI and slugged .815 in 27 at bats. This year Naehring drove in 32 and scored 32 runs while batting .367 with 5 longballs. He's 7th in the American League in batting and 3rd in RBI! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Marquis Grissom, Cincinnati's starting centerfielder. Marquis was on fire, hitting .423 with 1 HR and 8 RBI. Grissom has hit for a .354 average this season. He has 12 extra base hits along with 52 total bases, resulting in a .542 slugging percentage. He's 10th in the National League in batting! |
Saturday 5/8/1999: Pedro Martinez NO-HITS Detroit DETROIT - Pedro Martinez had some fun again. REAL fun. Detroit hitters did not. Cleveland's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 23 career shutouts in 192 games started. Tim Hyers spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 1 away in the 9th inning. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' Martinez (5-0) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 111 pitches. Troy O'leary helped Martinez at the plate, he finished 2 for 3, hitting a homerun, scoring two runs and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-0. |
Monday 5/3/1999: Cruz jr. (ANA) and Rodriguez (HOU) win P.O.W. award The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Anaheim's Jose Cruz jr. this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Jose went 12 for 27 (.444), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 11 RBI. Henry Rodriguez from Houston wins his 8th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Henry pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .438 with 5 HR and 15 RBI while slugging .938. Henry managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. |
Saturday 5/1/1999: Houston's Perez named Pitcher of the Month It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Kansas City's pitcher Chad Ogea. He started 5 games in April, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 2.25 in 36 innings. Chad fanned 26 hitters. Melido Perez pitched like a legend in April, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His record of 3-0 in 4 was among the leagues best this month. In 25.1 innings of work he allowed just 23 hits while striking out 14, compiling an ERA of just 1.42. |
Saturday 5/1/1999: Arizona's Everett named Batter of the Month It's the 1st time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Kansas City's centerfielder Andruw Jones. Andruw went 36 for 85 (.424), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 21 RBI. The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Carl Everett, Arizona's starting centerfielder. Everett helped his team with an average of .360 and 25 RBI in 89 at bats. |
Monday 4/26/1999: Hundley (BAL) and Walker (CIN) win P.O.W. award Todd Hundley wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .529 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.059 in 17 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was Cincinnati's Todd Walker, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Todd went 12 for 19 (.632), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 4 RBI. |
Sunday 4/25/1999: Carlos Perez fires 2-hitter against Cincinnati PHILADELPHIA - Carlos Perez had an unexpectedly great performance against Cincinnati on Sunday, pitching a 2-hitter for his 1st shutout of the season. Perez (1-1) struck out 6 and walked 3, throwing 66 of 114 pitches for strikes. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' The hitting star for Philadelphia was shortstop Dean Palmer, he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, doubling twice, scoring two runs and collecting 2 RBI. Philadelphia improved its record to 7-12, scoring 9 runs on 14 hits. |
Thursday 4/22/1999: Pittsburgh's Boone severely injured, out for season PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's second baseman Bret Boone will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Pittsburgh and Montreal. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Boone collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Calf Muscle. Bret has gone 16 for 57 (.281) this season, hitting no bombs and driving in 14 runs. He has scored 11 runs on his own. |
Monday 4/19/1999: Pittsburgh's Pat Borders pounds six hits PHILADELPHIA - Pittsburgh's catcher Pat Borders once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Philadelphia's pitching staff with a 6 hit performance on Monday. Number 1 in the 1st inning accounted for a RBI double. Number 6 in the 9th inning accounted for a RBI double. He collected singles in the 3rd , in the 5th inning , in the 7th (one RBI) and in the 8th inning (one RBI). Pat scored 3 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He now has a total of 12 hits this season, accounting for a .267 batting average. Pittsburgh improved its record to 12-3, scoring 17 runs on 20 hits. |
Monday 4/19/1999: Guerrero (BAL) and Mccarty (SDN) win P.O.W. award It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's rightfielder Vladimir Guerrero. Vladimir went 12 for 29 (.414), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 10 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. This year Guerrero drove in 15 and scored 12 runs while batting .302 with 4 longballs. David Mccarty from San Diego wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. David went 15 for 28 (.536), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 10 RBI. Mccarty has hit for a .404 average this season. He has 13 extra base hits along with 47 total bases, resulting in a .904 slugging percentage. He's 4th in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! |
Sunday 4/18/1999: Vince Coleman stars with 2000th career hit ARIZONA - St. Louis' leftfielder Vince Coleman already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 9th inning was a double off Gabe White. Along with his 2000 hits, Vince collected 58 homeruns and 657 RBI in 13 seasons. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' |
Sunday 4/18/1999: Todd Stottlemyre pitches his 1st shutout of the season TAMPA BAY - It was a great day for Chicago (A)'s right-hander Todd Stottlemyre. The 33-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Tampa Bay on Sunday. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Stottlemyre (1-2) struck out 8 and walked 2, throwing 73 of 109 pitches for strikes. Ray Lankford helped Stottlemyre at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, scoring two runs. Chicago (A) scored 4 runs on 7 hits. |
Friday 4/16/1999: Brian Holman (KC) will miss 9 weeks KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's pitcher Brian Holman was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 3rd inning of the game between Kansas City and Cleveland. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Holman will miss about 9 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Skull which will require surgery. |
